Glenwood Canyon Recreation Trail is the area’s most popular cycling trail. Relax at the underground vapor-filled caverns at the Yampah Spa and Vapor Caves that were originally used by the Ute Indians for both healing and rituals. Suspended on the edge of Glenwood Canyon’s cliffs, the clear turquoise lake and the waterfall that spills into it are a breathtaking sight after the uphill climb about a mile long. It’s one of the most popular hikes in Colorado. That means top fishing, rafting, kayaking and a world-class whitewater activity area. Bald eagles are often seen in the trees along the route on I-70 between GJ & GS.The Glenwood Hot Springs Pool sits at the intersection of the Colorado and Roaring Fork rivers, once a place where Ute Indians wintered. As has been said before, you really can't go wrong on any of the roads in Colorado, even I-70. You might even get to see some mountain sheep feeding along side the road. I would recommend the drive through the canyon on another day though, if you have a little time and want to see a gorgeous canyon that has been carved by the Colorado River. Also, Glenwood Canyon is on the eastern side of GS and you wouldn't go through it on the route from GJ to GS. Most of this route is absolutely beautiful scenery, but it will take most of the day, so start fairly early. At Hotchkiss, turn onto 133 through Redstone. Although the road is a little curvy, it is well worth the trip. The oakbrush, and aspen trees along that stretch of road will be changing colors and are very pretty. As a resident of the GJ area, I would recommend the southern route, traveling on US-50 past Montrose and turn on CO 92 at Blue Mesa Reservoir, about half way to Gunnison.
